Men's Tennis Faces Rough Water Against Waves

Los Angeles, Calif. -- 19th-ranked USC men's tennis dropped a close match to fourth-ranked Pepperdine, 4-3, this afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Trojans fall to 12-5 overall this season, while the Waves remain undefeated with a 16-0 record.
USC began the match surrendering the doubles point by posting one win and dropping the No. 1 and 3 matches. At the top spot, Nicholas Rainey and Ryan Moore were defeated by Sebastien Graeff and Anthony Ross of Pepperdine, 8-5, for the second time this season. The pairs had previously met in the final round of the ITA Regionals in November. Troy's Daniel Langre and Patrick Gottesleben recorded a convincing 8-2 win over John Hui and Robert Kendrick at the No. 2 position for USC's sole doubles victory.
In singles, Pepperdine recorded three wins at the No. 2, 4 and 6 positions to clinch the match victory. Despite being down 4-2 in the contest, the Trojans were not ready to retire. The final singles match at No. 1 was decided in a third set tie-breaker as 22nd-ranked Gottesleben defeated 53rd-ranked Kendrick. Following a 7-6 win in the first set, Gottesleben surrendered quickly in the second, 3-6. The two matched each other point-for-point in the final set, 3-3, as Gottesleben stole the final three consecutive points for the win.
USC will resume Pac-10 dual match play on Friday, March 31. The Trojans will face crosstown rival UCLA at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
