LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- 16th-ranked USC men's tennis (16-8) rebounded from yesterday's loss with a 6-1 victory over No. 35 Cal this afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium.
To start the afternoon, the Trojans' top-ranked duo of Nicholas Rainey and Ryan Moore were upset by No. 52 Ben Miles and Robert Kowalczyk, 4-8, marking the pairs fourth-straight disappointing defeat in the last two weeks. Despite the loss at court one, Patrick Gottesleben and Daniel Langre earned USC's fist victory with a 9-7 win over Cal's John Paul Fruttero and David Tzou. Andrew Park and Parker Collins followed with an 8-5 victory over Scott Kintz and Hiro Nakamura for the Trojans' doubles point.
Troy did surrender the first singles match as Fruttero posted a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 win over Gottesleben for Cal's only match point. USC clinched the match with a victory at the No. 3 position. Moore defeated Nakamura, 6-2, 6-4, in the only match decided in straight sets. The No. 2, 4, 5 and 6 matches were each settled in third-set tiebreakers as the Trojans swept past the Golden Bears in the remaining matches.
USC will compete in the Pac-10 Championship next week (April 27-30) in Ojai, Calif.
