CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Men's tennis junior Johan Berg made the most of an unexpected opportunity in his first fall tournament of the season. After receiving a "lucky loser" spot in the main draw of the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship, Berg advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to eventual finalist Benedickt Dorsch of Baylor.
The tournament, which featured a prequalifier, qualifier and main draw, was held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., last week.
Berg was selected to enter the championship in the qualifying round, held Oct. 7-8. There, he defeated 10th-seeded Matias Ormaza of Georgia, 6-2, 7-5, in the first round, but fell to Clayton Almeida of Winthrop, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the second round.
Despite the loss, Berg became the fortunate recipient of the "lucky loser's" spot when a main draw player dropped out due to injury.
Berg went on to defeat Mississippi's 16th-seeded Paul Ciorascu in the opener of the main draw, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the Round of 32 he beat Alabama's Stephen Mitchell in two sets, 7-5, 7-5, but eventually fell to top-seed Dorsch in the following round, 7-6(2), 6-3. Dorsch advanced to the final were he fell to Alex Vlaski of Washington for the championship.
