Trojans Down Sun Devils, 6-1

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 19th-ranked USC men's tennis team completed a desert sweep by defeating No. 47 Arizona State, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in Tempe. The Trojans, who handed the Sun Devils their first loss of the season, improved to 5-1, while ASU fell to 4-1. The match did not count against conference records.
"It turned out to be a fantastic weekend for us to be able to come to Arizona and beat both of these teams," said USC head coach Peter Smith. "We are really clicking as a team and now we have to make sure we keep this momentum going when we return home."
The Trojans started off the match strong by winning all three doubles matches for the first point of the day. The duos of Johan Berg and Adriano Biasella, and Daniel Langre and Drew Hoskins captured the first two wins at courts two and three to secure the doubles point. Ruben Torres and Jamil Al-Agba were the last off the court, but they managed to complete the sweep with a 10-8 decision in the tiebreaker over ASU's Christopher Biro and Ryan McBride at No. 3.
The Sun Devils were never able to garner any momentum against the Trojans. USC posted quick two-set victories at courts 2, 3, 4 and 6 in singles play. Berg was credited with the match-clinching victory by beating Biro, 7-5, 6-3, at the No. 3 position.
Arizona State's only win came at the No. 5 position as Jonathan Kinsella overcame Langre in a hard-fought, three-set match, 6-7(4), 7-6(4), 10-3.
USC returns home this week to host Pepperdine on Friday, Feb. 28, and Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 29. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
