TULSA, OKLA. -- USC's No. 7-ranked singles star Steve Johnson rebounded from a three-set loss days ago in the main draw and roared through consolation singles play in Tulsa to secure that title at the ITA/D'Novo All-American Championships. Johnson pinned together five consecutive straight-set wins in consolation competition, including a 7-5, 6-4 upset of the nation's No. 1 in the semifinals. Today in the consolation title match, Johnson beat No. 15 Javier Garrapiz 6-4, 6-2 to get the win.
Ever since stumbling 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-2 to No. 45 Reid Carleton of Duke his first match of the year during the first round of the main draw, Johnson has been on singles cruise control. He faced four players ranked in the nation's top-40 in three days of competition in Tulsa, Okla., and took down each one. Yesterday's semifinal was the toughest opponent, and technically the tightest match of the stretch by the numbers, as Johnson upset No. 1 J.P. Smith of Tennessee with a 7-5, 6-4 victory to move into the consolation singles title match. There, No. 7 Johnson went up against Georgia's Javier Garrapiz, who ranks No. 14, and Johnson posted a solid 6-4, 6-2 win to wrap up his run at the ITA/D'Novo All-American.

While ITA competition was going strong in Tulsa, two other Trojans were getting in some good competition at the SDSU Invite this weekend. Newcomer Michael Grant worked his way to the title match in his singles bracket, before taking his first loss of the tournament today. Sophomore Joel Giger also had a strong singles run in San Diego. The pair teamed up for doubles as well, and finished with a split on the weekend. Complete results for Grant and Giger in San Diego follow the ITA All-American results below.
