USC junior Steve Johnson is making his presence known on the international circuit, competing as an amateur and beating some highly regarding players in the process this week in Champaign, Ill. Johnson is quarterfinal-bound after pinning up some big wins at the JSM Challenger of Champaign-Urbana in the past two rounds.
A wildcard into the action, Johnson first came up against John Paul Fruttero in the first round, taking down the USA player 6-4, 6-4 to move into the Round of 16 today. There, Johnson beat Australian James Lemke -- ranked 289 in the ATP world rankings --with another straight-set victory, winning 7-5, 7-6 (2) to make his move into tomorrow's quarterfinals.
Johnson will face another wild card player tomorrow in the quarterfinals as he goes up against Amer Delic of Bosnia.
