USC Men Start Fall Play In Napa

NAPA, CALIF. - The two-time defending NCAA champion USC men's tennis team kicked off the fall season by sending four players to Napa for individual competition at the Land Rover Napa Valley Tennis Classic. The Trojans had a member of each class represented, with senior Jaak Poldma joined by junior Daniel Nguyen, sophomore JT Sundling and freshman Ray Sarmiento for a fall tune-up.
USC's foursome joined USTA Junior level players as well as a group of other collegiate players for singles and doubles competition this weekend. On Day One, the Trojans came up empty in singles, but Nguyen and Sarmiento teamed up successfully in doubles to beat the USTA pair of Sock/Frank 9-7. Nguyen and JT Sundling both snagged singles wins on the second day of play. Sundling made short work of Kentucky's Maks Gold with a 6-0, 6-2 win, and Nguyen gutted out a three-set comeback victory against Texas' Jean Anderson with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 performance. Later that day, Sundling would team up with Sarmiento for some underclassmen magic as the pair beat the USTA's McDonald/Harrington 8-4.
Jaak Poldma got in the singles win column on Day Three, taking down his own Texas opponent in beating Longhorn David Holiner 7-6 (3), 6-4. Sundling also got in a solid three-set win before the conclusion of action in Napa, as the USC sophomore topped the USTA's Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4). The Trojans are set for another trip to Northern California next weekend with action set for the Battle of the Bay in San Francisco from Oct. 1-3.
