EUGENE, ORE. -- Another benchmark in USC head coach Peter Smith's career was locked in today when the No. 1 Trojan tennis team stormed to a 7-0 shutout of No. 59 Oregon today in Pac-12 play. Smith, who has his Trojans chugging along on a 41-match winning streak, has also now reached his 200th career win as head coach at USC. Now in his 10th season at the helm at Troy, Smith holds a 200-61 career mark with the Trojans as the three-time defending NCAA champs now improve to 21-0 this year and 2-0 in Pac-12 play.
Apparently determined to net Smith win number 200, the USC men surrendered little in today's clash with the Ducks. Doubles play saw the Trojans roll to convincing wins down the line, led by #15 Johnson/Quiroz' 8-2 win on court one, followed by an 8-4 decision from Gomez/Hanfmann on three and then an 8-3 victory by #18 Nguyen/Sarmiento at the No. 2 spot to rush right into singles play.
#23 sophomore Ray Sarmiento was near flawless in his performance on court two today, bringing home the first win of the singles segment on a 6-0, 6-1 win over Robin Cambier. #2 senior Steve Johnson was similarly powerful at the top spot in ringing up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Alex Rovello for the senior's 53rd consecutive singles victory.
Now up 3-0 in the match, USC saw freshman Roberto Quiroz cap off the clincher with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Jose Izquierdo at the No. 5 position, and Peter Smith's 200th career win as a Trojan was then officially in the books. Freshman Eric Johnson added to the Trojans' winning lead with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win on court six over Sho Higuchi, and then #13 senior Daniel Nguyen finished off Jeff Mullen 7-6 (3), 6-1 at the No. 3 slot to make it a 6-0 USC advantage. On court four, #53 sophomore Emilio Gomez had to battle back against Daniel Sardu after the Trojan slipped up in a first-set tiebreaker. Gomez got the job done, however, on a 6-7 (7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) victory that recorded USC's second sweep of its opening Pac-12 road trip.
The Trojans have more road action ahead next week with their first conference visit to Utah and match at Arizona. USC will face the Utes at 1:30 p.m. MT on Friday (April 6) in Salt Lake City, and will then head to Tucson for take on the Wildcats at 11 a.m. on Saturday (April 7).
