LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The top-ranked USC men's tennis team pitched the eighth shutout win of its 15-match winning run through the 2012 season with today's 7-0 victory over visiting No. 50 Virginia Tech. Solid doubles play gave way to a powerful singles push, clinched by freshman Eric Johnson. With a 15-0 record on the year, the USC men now carry an overall win streak of 35 consecutive matches as the Trojans take a Spring Break trip through Texas next week.
Today's home match for the Trojans saw USC pin up the doubles point with a sweep sparked by big wins from two rare pairings. Matched up for the first time this year was the senior-freshman combo of Steve Johnson and Roberto Quiroz, who cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 2 spot over Virginia Tech's Daciek/Oliveira. Playing in their first dual match together, Emilio Gomez and Yannick Hanfmann preserved their undefeated record as a pair with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position to give them an 8-0 record together. That secured the doubles point for the Trojans, although USC's #49 Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento added one more win for good measure with an 8-5 victory on court one to bring up singles action.
USC's singles lineup also featured a few adjustments. Emilio Gomez stepped into the No. 1 spot with Yannick Hanfmann at No. 2, followed by Ray Sarmiento on court three and Daniel Nguyen on four. Roberto Quiroz took over the No. 5 spot, and opened the action with a 6-4, 6-1 win to get the ball rolling on USC's shutout. Sarmiento was next, picking up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Patrick Daciek, and Eric Johnson stepped up for the clincher on a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six. With the Trojans up 4-0 in the match, Nguyen took down Maurice Antun 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot before Hanfmann came through in a third-set tiebreak for a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory on court two over Lucas Oliveira. Finally, bringing it all home for the day, was Gomez with a decisive 6-3, 6-3 win at the top over Luka Somen.
The Trojans take off for Texas next, going up against the Longhorns on Tuesday (March 13) and then visiting Texas A&M on Thursday (March 15).
