Trojans Pass First Test Of Fall In Napa

Last weekend, several members of the USC men's tennis team kicked off the 2016-17 campaign with individual competition out at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic. Singles and doubles play was on the docket for seniors Nick Crystal and Rob Bellamy along with sophomore Logan Smith and freshman Riley Smith as the Trojans convened in Napa from Sept. 16-18 for the first competition of the fall.

Each Trojan put forth strong singles performances at the event, while pairing up powerfully in doubles play with two wins apiece. Rob Bellamy snagged three singles wins in his first three matches to move into the Shoot-Out portion of the event, where he took a loss in a 10-game pro set. No. 27 Nick Crystal, No. 48 Logan Smith and Riley Smith each went 2-1 in singles in the first three days, while Logan Smith — who had snagged straight-set upset win over Cal's #13 Florian Lakat — joined Bellamy in the Shoot-Out on day three and also was edged out in the pro set.

In doubles action, Crystal teamed up with freshman Riley Smith for two wins, while Bellamy and Logan Smith also snagged two wins, including a smooth 6-0 shutout to cap off their doubles work in Napa.
