Bruins get the win in Ojai to take the title from the defending champs.
OJAI, CALIF. — The No. 12 USC men's tennis team came up short of back-to-back Pac-12 titles in taking a 4-1 loss to No. 2 UCLA in the conference championship match today in Ojai, Calif. The Bruins were able to hold off the Trojans to take the title from the defending champs. USC goes to 17-8 overall with the loss and awaits the NCAA Tournament selection show coming up on May 1 to find out the next step for the Trojans' postseason push.
In doubles play, USC opened up with a 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot as #7 Trojans Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven beat out #17 Rapp/Smith to claim the USC duo's eighth straight win. UCLA would counter, however, claiming a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot before fighting back to win it on court one to take the doubles point from the Trojans.
UCLA's 1-0 advantage grew to 2-0 as top-ranked Martin Redlicki secured a 6-3, 6-4 win over USC's top gun, #11 Brandon Holt, on court one. Next, UCLA got a 3-0 lead with Maxime Cressy's 6-1, 6-4 victory over another Trojan sophomore, Riley Smith. USC's #82 Daniel Cukierman worked his way to a 6-3, 6-5 win over UCLA's #80 Evan Zhu on court two to register a point for USC, but the Bruins responded quickly with a 6-4, 6-4 clincher from Connor Hance over USC's Jake DeVine on court six to secure a 4-1 championship win.
USC now awaits the NCAA Tournament bracket reveal coming up on Tuesday (May 1) at 2:30 p.m. to learn the next step in the Trojans' postseason progress.
