USC's 542 student-athletes posted an average semester grade point average of 2.95 in the just-completed Spring 2018 term, tied for the second highest department-wide mark since calculations were first kept in 2000.
The department's cumulative GPA of 3.0 is an all-time high.
Nearly half (256) of USC's student-athletes had a 3.0 or higher GPA this spring, including 14 with a perfect 4.0. And 129 of them (the second most ever) made USC's Dean's List, including 18 from the women's lacrosse team, 17 from women's rowing and 14 from women's swimming and diving.
Eleven of USC's 21 teams had GPAs above 3.0 this spring, including 9 women's squads, topped by women's swimming and diving's 3.42 (the best spring mark of any Trojan sport and the women's swim program's all-time high). The women's rowing (3.28) and men's golf (3.09) teams posted their second-best semester GPAs on record.
Five Trojan teams did not have any student-athlete with a sub-2.0 GPA in Spring 2018: men's and women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's soccer and women's swimming and diving.
The women's volleyball team had the most improved GPA (+.38) from Fall 2017 to Spring 2018.
"We are very pleased with the academic performance of our student-athletes," said Dr. Magdi El-Shahawy, USC senior associate athletic director in charge of Student-Athlete Academic Services. "This continues to validate our culture and our message: you can succeed both in the classroom and on the playing field at USC. Doing so at such an academically-demanding university as USC makes it an even more impressive achievement by our student-athletes. They, along with our coaches who support their academic pursuits and our staff in the Stevens Academic Center, are to be congratulated."
Earlier this month, USC Athletics announced its best-ever cumulative 21-team NCAA Academic Progress Rate of 981, the fifth year in a row that Troy hit an all-time high in the annual scorecard of academic achievement for all Division I teams. Five Trojan teams received NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding performance in the classroom: men's track, men's volleyball, women's beach volleyball, women's golf and women's cross country.
