Trojan women post big victory over Sun Devils
Seniors Louise Hansson and Naomi Gowlett, junior Marta Ciesla and sophomore Isa Odgers each won a pair of races to lead the No. 7 USC women to a win at Arizona State on Friday (Nov. 1) while sophomore Alexei Sancov led the Trojan men with two victories in a loss to the Sun Devils squad.
The Trojan women won 184-113 while the men lost 184-109.
Hansson got her first win of the day by capturing the 100y back in 54.46 while freshman Aela Janvier was third (55.18). Janvier later won the 200y back in 1:58.55. Swimming in multiple events for the first time this season, Hansson went on to win her specialty, the 100y fly, in 53.24.
Ciesla won both sprints, taking the 50y free in 22.90 and the 100 in 50.21. Sophomore Laticia Transom, who won USC's first event of the day in the 200y free (1:47.11), finished second in the 50y free (23.04) while junior Jemma Schlicht was second in the 100y free (50.87) and third in the 200y free (1:50.73). Schlicht was also second to Hansson in the 100y fly (54.78).
Sophomore Isa Odgers remained unbeaten this year in the 200y breast with a 2:13.00 and closed the individual racing with a first in the 400y IM (4:22.06). She was also second in the 100y breast (1:02.66).
In the diving well, senior Naomi Gowlett swept the springboard events, winning the 1-meter (287.40) and 3-meter (281.85). Senior Carly Souza was second on 3-meter (270.68) while freshman Nike Agunbiade was second on 1-meter (275.48).
Senior Tatum Wade posted a pair of second-place finishes in the 500y (4:53.87) and 1000y free (9:59.84). Freshman Nicole Pavlopoulou had a pair of breaststroke thirds in the 100 (1:02.85) and 200 (2:14.04).
Sophomore Alexei Sancov secured the USC men's teams two victories, sweeping the fly events with a 48.07 in the 100 and a 1:48.11 in the 200.
Other top finishes for the men included senior Matt McDermott taking second in the 200y breast (2:06.75) and sophomore Victor Johansson's second in the 1000y free (9:11.20).
Senior diver Henry Fusaro, after missing most of the 2019 spring semester due to injury, returned to action and posted a pair of seconds on 1-meter (330.30) and 3-meter (355.50).
The USC women also won both the 200y medley and free relays.
