LOS ANGELES – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (5-1) secured a fourth straight dual victory on a 3-2 win over No. 4 Florida State (8-2) and ended the Seminoles' eight-match winning streak at Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday, March 7.
In the teams' first meeting on USC's campus since 2016, the Seminoles fired the first shot with a win at the No. 5 position where Macy Jerger and Jenna Johnson completed their five-setter with a 21-12, 20-22, 15-12 win over junior Cammie Dorn and freshman Mollie Ebertin. The Trojans pulled even with a win at the third court where sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto delivered a 25-27, 24-22, 15-13 win against Molly McBain and Kate Privett.
The Seminoles went in front again on their win at the fourth court. Payton Caffrey and Sara Putt completed their 21-16, 19-21, 15-9 victory over junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser. At the top of the lineup, senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina dropped the second for their first set loss of the season, but came back to defeat Brooke Kuhlman and Payton Rund, 21-16, 17-21, 15-9, to even the dual at two-all.
At the No. 2 position, senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater fought out a 27-25 win over Alaina Chacon and Madison Fitzpatrick in the first set, but the Seminole duo came from behind to win, 21-19, in the second. Tied at 10-all and 12-all in the third frame, the Trojans prevailed on a dig-turned-kill for Slater to end the set, 15-13.
