The Women of Troy won the third meeting of the season between the two crosstown rivals
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 2-ranked USC beach volleyball team (19-4) ended an unblemished season for No. 1 UCLA (25-1) in their third dual at the Pac-12 North Invitational at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium on Sunday, April 7. The Women of Troy snapped UCLA's 29-match winning streak and dealt the Bruins their first loss of the season in the teams' third meeting.
In the only match of the dual to go three sets, the Trojans' duo of sophomore Haley Hallgren and senior Alexandra Poletto sealed the victory by defeating Zana Muno and Abby Van Winkle 21-16, 10-21, 15-13, at the No. 3 position. The win is the Trojan pair's 31st together, which moves them up into a 13th-place tie for all-time wins by USC tandems.
The Trojans scored a 2-0 lead in the dual with straight-set wins at the top two courts. First, senior Abril Bustamante and sophomore Tina Graudina avenged a loss to the Bruin twin pair of Megan and Nicole McNamara with a 21-16, 21-11 win at the No. 1 position.
Similarly, senior Terese Cannon and sophomore Sammy Slater turned the tables on Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil at the No. 2 spot by claiming a 21-17, 21-18 win over the Bruin duo after falling to them twice earlier this season.
The Bruins had the answer and scored straight-set victories at the bottom of the lineup to even the score at two-all. UCLA's first dual point came from the No. 4 position where Lea Monkhouse and Savvy Simo defeated junior Joy Dennis and sophomore Maja Kaiser, 21-16, 21-11. The equalizer came from the No. 5 court when Izzy Carey and Lindsey Sparks earned a 21-13, 21-14 win over the Trojans' freshman duo of Laurel Kujan and Hannah Martin.
Up next, the Women of Troy take on Washington (6-8) at 11 a.m. PT to conclude play at the Pac-12 North Invitational. USC returns home to host SoCal rivals Long Beach State and Pepperdine at Merle Norman Stadium on Thursday, April 11.
