Brandon Holt Wins 13th Straight To Reach NCAA Quarterfinals

Trojan junior is making USC’s deepest run in the NCAA Singles tourney since 2012.
ORLANDO, FLA. — USC junior Brandon Holt confidently climbed out of a first-set hole and pocketed a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback victory that propels the No. 5 seeded Trojan into his first NCAA Singles Quarterfinal. Holt will carry a 13-match win streak — the longest of his USC career — into his clash with top-seeded Nuno Borges of Mississippi State tomorrow at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Holt's Quarterfinal appearance is the deepest run by a Trojan in the NCAA Singles Championships since Stevie Johnson won his second consecutive title back in 2012.
Holt was up against 9-16 seed Yuya Ito of Texas in today's NCAA Round of 16. Ito had clinched the Longhorns' NCAA Team title just three days ago, but Holt interrupted Ito's winning momentum by tapping into his own. Holt had won 12 straight singles matches entering today's bout with Ito, and although his Longhorn opponent had the early advantage in capturing the first set 6-2, Holt regrouped quickly and took control of things from there. The junior, ranked #6 in the nation, fought back to beat #12 Ito with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback and take the right to fight another day in Orlando.
Holt meets top-seeded Borges tomorrow (May 23) in the NCAA Quarterfinals, likely to be held at 1 p.m. PT and certain to be televised on Tennis Channel. Borges and Holt have met once before in collegiate competition during Holt's freshman season, with the Trojan beating the Mississippi State player 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the 2016 ITA All-American Consolation Semifinals.
