No. 3 USC Beach Volleyball Wins Eighth Straight in 3-2 Decision Over No. 16 GCU
March 07, 2025 | Women's Beach Volleyball
The Women of Troy won a pair of three-setters to close out a victory over the Lopes
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 3-ranked USC beach volleyball team (9-2) won its eighth consecutive dual with a 3-2 victory over 16th-ranked Grand Canyon (7-2) to open the MPSF Midseason Rumble at Stanford Beach Volleyball Stadium on Friday, March 7.
The win is USC's fifth straight over the Lopes and makes the Trojans to 24-4 in Northern California cities including a 19-4 record at Stanford.
GCU won first sets at four of five positions and forced USC to win two three-set matches to secure the dual. At the No. 3 position, the Trojans' duo of sophomore Madison Goellner and junior Mabyn Thomas delivered the clinching point with a comeback 14-21, 21-18, 15-10 win over Karynn Garrow and Sophia Hladyniuk. The USC pair rolled out to a 5-0 lead in the third to put the pressure on the Lopes.
In the other match to go three sets, USC's top pair of sophomore Zoey Henson and junior Madison White dropped a 21-17 first set to Adrianna Ferro and Katie Keefe but fought back with a vengeance to complete a 17-21, 21-12, 15-11 win and evened the dual at 2-2. The win is the fifth straight for Henson-White, which improves to 7-2 on the season—all at the top court.
Grand Canyon scored the first point of the dual with a win at the No. 4 position. There, Becca Drake and Jessica Drake claimed a straight-set win, 21-19, 21-18, over newly paired sophomores Jess Horwath and Kaileigh Truslow.
USC evened the dual initially with a win from the No. 2 position when freshman Kennedy Coakley and sophomore Ashley Pater improved to 6-2 with a 21-19, 21-13 win over Rhea Kohl and Ines Piret. Coakley-Pater trailed the GCU pair by as many as four points early in the first set but came back to clear the opening frame and were not threatened in the second set.
The Lopes had a momentary 2-1 lead in the dual on a win at the No. 5 position. There, Madi Bogle and Regan Holmer collected a 21-15, 21-17 win over USC's duo of freshman Calinda Kok and graduate Ella Larkin.
In a non-scoring exhibition match, GCU's pair of Sarah Edler and Hailey Hutchings defeated sophomore Grace Hong and freshman Calla Tufto in straight sets, 21-14, 21-18.
The Women of Troy are back in action for a noon PT match against No. 9 California (7-1) in their second dual at the Rumble. All duals at the MPSF Midseason Rumble will be shown live on Big Ten Plus (B1G+).
