USC Men’s Tennis Falls to UCLA in NCAA Super Regional
May 09, 2025 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis (16-11) NCAA tournament stopped in the NCAA Super Regionals following a close loss, 4-2, to crosstown rival No. 16 UCLA (19-8) on Friday, May 9, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Trojans were riding high entering the Super Regional match-up after defeating No. 7 San Diego on the road to secure their spot in Round 16. That momentum got the Trojans off to a quick start in doubles play. Graduate student Tristan Bradley and senior Peter Makk got USC on the board with a win on doubles center court, 6-3, before freshmen Connor Church and Nathan Trouve battled through a tie-break, 7-6 (6), to lock down the first point of the match.
USC and UCLA were evenly matched across all six singles courts, with all six courts taking three sets to determine the outcome. Senior Karl Lee started strong on court four with a blistering first set win, but fell in sets two and three, giving the Bruins their first point. Junior Oscar Weightman's court three comeback came up just short, with the Bruins taking the overall match lead with the two back-to-back wins.
On court two, No. 88 Trouve mounted a furious comeback after going down in the first set, but No. 110 Emon van Loben Sels edged past, putting UCLA within one point of the quarterfinals. However, Church continued his stellar showing, going toe-to-toe on court six before securing the victory, 7-5, 6 (5)-7, 6-4, making the match 3-2.
All eyes turned to court four, where sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko faced off against the recently returned No. 35 Spencer Johnson. Iakubenko went up at the beginning of the third set, but Johnson's late-match push proved too much, and he secured the match for the Bruins with a 6-4 win in the third set.
