USC Football Hosts Fourth Annual Dave Nichol Health Screening
June 01, 2026 | Football
LOS ANGELES—On Monday, June 1, USC hosted its fourth annual Dave Nichol Health Screening for the Trojan Football staff.
Nichol, USC's former inside receivers coach and a longtime friend of USC head coach Lincoln Riley, passed away suddenly from cancer at age 45 in March of 2022.
"Too often, coaches let their personal health fall to the wayside," said Riley. "Four years ago, we began this annual health screening in honor of Dave. It's an opportunity for our entire staff to take time for themselves to get an annual medical workup. Our hope is that screenings like this will become a trend among other programs around the nation so coaches can catch any underlying health issues before it's too late."
The USC football coaches and support staff members were able to receive comprehensive medical evaluations on campus as part of their preparation for the upcoming season.
This year's Dave Nichol Heath Screening partnered with The 61 Initiative. In honor of former Appalachian State head coach Shawn Clark who suddenly passed away at age 50 due to complications from a stroke in 2025, The 61 Initiative is a program dedicated to encouraging coaches to undergo annual physicals and comprehensive health screenings before the start of each season.
