USC Quarterback Jayden Maiava Earns Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Honors

LOS ANGELES--USC quarterback Jayden Maiava earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading the Trojans to a 39-0 shutout victory over Fresno State in in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Friday (Sept. 4). This is the second Big Ten weekly honor for Maiava in his Trojan career.
Maiava went 23-of-25 (.920) for 349 yards and 3 TDs with a long of 68 yards in USC's first shutout since defeating Utah State 48-0 in 2024. It was USC's second shutout under head coach Lincoln Riley.
Maiava's 92.0% completion percentage is the highest single-game completion percentage by a USC quarterback since at least 1995 (minimum 25 attempts). He broke the mark he set last week against San José State (86.2% going 25-of-29). His 92.0% completion percentage was just three percentage points shy of USC's single-game record for a passer with at least 15 completions: Matt Barkley's 19-of-20 performance (.950) against Colorado in 2012. USC is the first FBS team since at least 1996 to throw for 400 yards and complete at least 93% of its passes.
Maiava completed 17-of-18 passes for 284 yards and 3 TDs in the first half, and he was a perfect 8-for-8 for 166 yards and 2 TDs in the second quarter.
Maiava had a stretch of 15 straight completions. The last time a USC quarterback had 15+ consecutive completions in a single game prior to Saturday was 17 by former Trojan and Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams on Sept. 30, 2023 at Colorado in a 48-41 win. Last week against San José State, Maiava had a stretch of 14-straight completions.
