USC men's tennis head coach Brett Masi brought Eric Johnson back to his alma mater to serve as his assistant coach in January of 2023. Johnson returns home ahead of the Trojans spring campaign.
Johnson arrived at USC after time spent as the Columbia men's tennis assistant coach. At Columbia, Johnson saw three Lions take a trip to the 2022 ITA Fall National Championships.
At Cal Poly, Johnson (associate head coach) coached the Mustangs to back-to-back Big West regular season titles for the first time since 2013. In 2021, the team went undefeated in Big West play, with six players earning all-conference accolades.
Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Johnson wrapped up a successful run on the ATP tour, winning tournaments in both Israel and Greece. At his best, he held an ATP ranking of 507.
While at USC, Johnson contributed to three national championship-winning teams. In 2014, Johnson was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after going undefeated in singles play to help the Trojans claim the 2014 NCAA Championship. During his senior year, Johnson was team captain and played in the No. 1 slots in singles and doubles. As a Trojan, EJ was a two-time ITA Southwest Regional Doubles Champion, playing with Max de Vroome (2013) and Yannick Hanfmann (2014).
He also earned Pac-12 All-Academic Honors and represented the United States at the University Games in Russia.
Originally from San Jose, California, the blue-chip recruit graduated from USC in 2015 with a degree in accounting.
