David Freeman is in his fourth season as coach of the USC cross country team and as an assistant coach in charge of the distance runners for the track and field team.
Last season Freeman helped all of his men's distance runners achieve personal bests and four of his women's distance runners set PRs during the track season. Robert Ford had an 800m PR of 1:47.54 which is just out of USC's all-time top 10. Freshman Mikaela Smith on the women's side ran the seventh-fastest 800m race all-time by a Trojan of 2:05.33. This past fall the cross country team had another solid season and two runners advanced to the NCAA West Regional.
In 2015, he developed a young middle distance squad and stretched them out to the cross country distance. In the fall, his cross country team took another step forward, with the team's highest finish at the West Regional since 2008 and defeating UCLA in the Dual Meet. His work with Katerina Berdousi saw her consistently achieving personal bests and running the sixth-fastest 5K race every by a Trojan woman. During the track season, he guided the development of Ford who finished fourth in the Pac-12 and 14th at the NCAA Championships, as well as establishing the school's indoor 800m record.
In his first season as USC's distance coach, 13 of his athletes posted PRs, including Jenna Tong and Kira Soderstrom who ran the third and fifth-fastest 3000m SC races ever by a Trojan woman.
Freeman spent the 2013 season working at TCU where he was an assistant coach for track and cross country. Prior to that, Freeman was the head coach at Freedom High in Orlando, Fla. for one season and at Tates Creek High in Lexington, Ky. for two seasons. In 2001, Freeman was named the Area 6 Girl's Track and Field Coach of the Year as he led the Commodores to a state runner-up finish in Class 3A.
Freeman worked with Florida's track and field team as a volunteer assistant for three seasons and at his alma mater Kentucky for one season.
He had an accomplished track career at Kentucky, highlighted by a trip to the 2008 Beijing Olympics to compete in the 1500m race. He represented Puerto Rico and finished 10th in his heat and 24th overall. Freeman graduated from Kentucky in 2005 with a degree in business management and earned his masters in business education from UK in 2009. While competing at Kentucky, Freeman was a three-time indoor All-American in the 800m and mile. He still holds the Kentucky school record in the indoor 800m.
