South Bend, Ind. -- On a weekend that seemed dismal for USC fans, both the men and women's tennis teams shined bright in South Bend. On Friday (October 15), men's tennis defeated the Fighting Irish, 4-3, followed by the Women of Troy who earned a 5-4 victory. Both matches were played concurrently at Eck Tennis Pavilion on six courts, with No. 4-6 singles first, then the three doubles matches and the No. 1-3 singles to conclude the match.
Despite a Notre Dame 3-2 lead in the contest, the men's tennis team won three-set matches at No. 2 and 3 singles to earn a come-from-behind victory. Aaron Talarico gave the Irish a quick 1-0 lead with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Parker Collins at No. 6 singles. USC's Greg Hill tied the match for Troy with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mark Overdevest at the No. 4 spot. Andrew Laflin held off Nicholas Rainey 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 to give Notre Dame a 2-1 advantage heading into doubles. Trojans' doubles team Patrick Gotteslleben and Andrew Park then beat Trent Miller and Smith 8-6 at No. 2. USC then won a pair of tiebreakers to win the doubles point and tie the match 2-2 heading into the final three singles matches. It was USC's Andrew Park who rallied for 0-3 in the third set to beat Notre Dame's Casey Smith 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the deciding match at No. 2 singles, ensuring Troy's victory.
The women's team entered the final three singles matches tied 3-3 after the Trojans won two of the first three singles, and the Irish earned wins in two of three doubles. Freshman Anita Loyola gave Troy a 1-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Kimberley Guy at No. 4. ND's Nina Vaughn tied the match with a three-set win over Veronika Safarova at No. 5, before freshman Tiffany Brymer rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Sarah Scaringe. In the first round of doubles, Loyola and Jewel Peterson lost their match, allowing the Irish to tie the score 2-2. Jacqui Boyd and Safarova, currently ranked 38th, rallied from 3-6 down and saved a set point at 5-6 in the tiebreaker to win the No. 2 doubles, only to be followed by a No. 1 doubles loss to the Irish. With a tie score, Kelly Zallinski gave the Irish a short-live 4-3 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Boyd at No. 2 singles.
