Freshman Jewel Peterson Claims Title At ITA Regionals

Irvine, Calif. -- USC freshman stand-out Jewel Peterson claimed her second title this season at the 1999 ITA-Sheraton Newport Beach Southern California Championships held at UC Irvine last weekend (Nov. 11-15). Peterson, who entered the tournament as the 15th seed, upset top-seeded Cintia Tortorella of Pepperdine in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, to win the singles title and receive an automatic berth to the ITA Championships this spring.
In doubles competition, USC's Anita Loyola and Veronika Safarova upended Annica Cooper and Amanda Basica of UCLA, the tournament top-seed and No. 2 team in the country, 8-4, in the second round of the main draw. The team later fell Lindsay Blau and Michelle Gough of Arizona, 8-4, in the third round. Tiffany Brymer and Kara Warkentin, after entering the tournament as the 7th seed, advanced to semifinals before also falling to eventual tournament champions Blau and Gough, 8-3.
