Tennis Programs Enter Season With High Rankings

LOS ANGELES -- USC men's and women's tennis enter the 2000 season with high ranks according to the NCAA Division I National Fall Rankings announced on December 6, 1999 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The women's team, which finished last season ranked 10th, maintained their position at No. 10 in the preseason poll. The men's team moved up six spots after ending 1998-99 ranked 17th, and begins the 2000 season ranked No. 11 among top national programs.
Women's tennis freshman Jewel Peterson of College Park, Ga., is ranked No. 4 among the top-100 singles players. Peterson finished undefeated in the preseason and won the ITA Region VIII Championship on November 15 by defeating Cintia Tortorella of Pepperdine. Other Women of Troy among the rankings include, Anita Loyola (freshman, Tucson, Ariz.) who ranks 70th in singles, and Tiffany Brymer (freshman, Apple Valley, Calif.) and Kara Warkentin (senior, Santa Barbara, Calif.) who are ranked 39th in doubles.
The men's team is led by sophomore Andrew Park (San Marino, Calif.) who enters the season ranked 12th after winning the men's ITA Region VIII Championship on November 7. He earned the title by defeating teammate Patrick Gottesleben (Waldorf, Germany). Gottesleben, the team's only senior, is ranked No. 30 in the preseason poll. Other Trojans who earned rankings include, sophomore Ryan Moore (Fullerton, Calif.) who is ranked No. 38 in singles and sophomore Nicholas Rainey (Mercer Island, Wash.) who ranks 60th. Moore and Rainey also rank No. 8 among the men's top-50 doubles.
