Long Beach, Calif. -- USC shot a season-low 28.8 percent from the field in a 62-49 defeat at the hands of Long Beach State at The Pyramid, Wednesday night (Dec. 8). Sophomore guard Tiffany Elmore (11 points, 4-of-14) was Troy's only player to score in double figures, as the team was unable to take advantage of key scoring opportunities resulting from 26 Long Beach State turnovers.
The Women of Troy fall to 3-2 this season, while the 49ers improve to 4-2 and maintain a three-game win streak.
In a personal season-best performance, Elmore also posted a team-leading eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks, but was responsible for seven of 22 USC turnovers. Center Denise Woods added nine points (4-of-10), seven boards, two steals and two blocks in the game. The Trojans sent Long Beach State to the line 13 times in the game, allowing the 49ers to hit 15-of-24 shots (62.5%). In comparison, USC only had nine free throw attempts, converting eight.
The 49ers were led by 6-foot-8 center Rhonda Smith who accounted for 28 points (11-of-17) and 12 rebounds on the night. The performance marked her second double-double this season. As a team, LBSU shot 43 percent form the field and 60 percent from three-point range.
