BERKELEY, Calif. - The California men's tennis team fell to No. 11 USC, 5-2, in their last home dual match of the season as the Trojans completed the weekend SoCal sweep. The Bears fell to No. 17 Pepperdine last Wednesday and top-ranked UCLA on Friday. Cal now falls to 7-12 (2-4 in Pac-10) while USC improves to 18-4 (6-1 in Pac-10).
There was at least one up-note for the Bears as senior Chris Santoso won his last home match as a Cal player, upsetting 68th-ranked Roman Kukal. Santoso took the first match 6-1 before Kukal retired due to injury, giving Santoso his first victory in 11 contests. Hiro Nakamura accounted for the other Bears point, defeating Scott Willinski in the No. 6 match. Scott Kintz and Chris Lewis flip-flopped in the singles lineup against the Trojans but to no avail as Kintz lost at No. 5 to Nick Rainey, 6-2, 6-2, and Lewis fell to Greg Hill in the fourth slot 6-1, 6-2. Erik Dmytruk lost to Andrew Park, 6-0, 6-4, in the No. 2 matchup and USC's Patrick Gottlesben defeated Adrian Barnes in the top slot, 6-2, 6-2. Cal did take a victory in doubles, where Kintz and Dmytruk downed Rainey and Park, 8-4; but the win proved impotent as Santoso and Barnes fell at the No. 1 spot to Gottlesben and Kukal, 8-6, and Cal lost the No. 3 doubles match with Lewis and David Tzou succumbing to USC's tandem of Hill and Willinski.
The Bears return to action Apr. 21 when they make up their dual match against Arizona State in Ojai, CA the day before the Pac-10 Championships commence. The two teams were originally scheduled to square off on Apr. 10 but rain caused a postponement of the contest.
