WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 1 USC women's water polo team saw its 18-game winning streak end in the championship game of the MPSF Tournament, a 3-2 loss to California on Sunday at UCLA.
Both defenses were up for the game, as USC senior goalie Bernice Orwig made 11 saves and Cal's Fana Fuqua made eight saves.
Cal had a 1-0 lead at halftime, but USC scored the next two goals (by Lisa Saenz and Sandra Milicev) to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth quarter. Cal, however, scored the game's final two goals, including the game-winner with 25 seconds left.
USC's Aniko Pelle was named Tournament MVP, while Jennifer Durley and Orwig made the All-Tournament first team.
The Golden Bears have defeated the Women of Troy in two of their three meetings this year.
USC is now 24-2 overall.
