LOS ANGELES -- Scoring five of the Trojans eight goals on the day, including four in the third quarter, junior driver George Csaszar led the No. 1 USC men's water polo team to a 8-6 victory over No. 9 UC San Diego in the 1999 home opener at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Friday afternoon.
The Trojans improved to 2-0 on the year, while the Tritans dropped their first match of the 1999 season and fell to 4-1 overall.
UC San Diego jumped out to 2-0 start, but the Trojans rebounded with two goals of their own by Csaszar and sophomore driver Jordan Hewko to tie the match at the end of the first quarter. The score was tied again at three apiece at halftime.
The Trojans rallied to take a 6-3 lead with three straight goals by Csaszar in the third quarter. The Tritans quickly narrowed the lead to 6-5, and then again to 6-7 in the fourth quarter, but USC added a final goal by senior driver Allen Basso, his second on the day, to secure the victory for the Trojans.
USC hosts the Southern California Tournament, featuring the top 10 teams in the nation, on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 18-19).
