Stanford Beats USC in So-Cal Water Polo Final
September 19, 1999 | Men's Water Polo
Sept. 19, 1999
LOS ANGELES - Brian Heifferon scored a match-high four points, including the go-ahead penalty shot in the first overtime period, to lift the No. 2 Stanford men's water polo team to an 11-10 victory over No. 1 USC in the championship game of the Southern California Tournament at McDonald's Swim Stadium on Sunday.
The Trojans (5-1) actually scored more goals than the Cardinal, 10-8, but Stanford (6-0) earned its winning margin by hitting three two-pointers. Heifferon's two-pointer gave Stanford a 9-6 lead with 4:55 left in regulation, though USC stormed back with goals by Peter Janov, George Csaszar and Ivan Babic to send the game into overtime.
Allen Basso's lob shot gave the Trojans a 10-9 lead in the first overtime period (USC's first lead since it was 1-0), but Stanford struck back with a 6-on-5 goal by Jeff Nesmith and Heifferon's penalty shot in the final second of the first overtime. Neither team scored in the second overtime period, though USC got off two good shots in the final 30 seconds.
The final was a rematch of the 1998 NCAA championship game, which USC won in overtime.
UCLA took third place with a 12-8 win over UC Irvine, Pacific beat Pepperdine, 6-5, in the fifth-place game and California defeated Long Beach State, 5-4, in the seventh-place game.
All of the top 10-ranked teams in the country took part in the tournament, and all 13 of the teams were ranked among the top 18.
Casey Wood of Air Force was the tournament's high scorer with 12 points.
