Los Angeles - The USC women's golf team debuted today at fourth in the preseason Mastercard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
The Trojans' 231 votes in the poll is the second highest Pac-10 total after No. 2 Arizona's 264. Duke is first overall with a 273-vote total. Among individuals, incoming USC freshman Candie Kung is ranked 13th after advancing to the round of 16 at the US Amateur this summer. She is the No.1-rated junior girl in the world according to the Golfweek/Titleist amateur rankings. Junior Nicole Dalkas is ranked 23rd after a strong finish last season. She rebounded from an injured back to finish fifth overall at the NCAA West Regional. For her efforts, she was named to the All Pac-10 first-team.
The 1999 Trojans lose 1998 NCAA individual champion Jennifer Rosales but are still in the hunt for the national championship. Senior Linda Ishii and sophomore Leila Chartrand join Dalkas as key returning veterans, while Yon Yim, Mikaela Parmlid and Kung make up perhaps the top freshman class in the country.
USC begins the 1999 season on Monday (Sept. 13) at the Oregon State University Fall Preview in Sunriver, Ore.
