Tempe, Ariz. -- Led by Erica Mashia's 17 points, USC fell to Arizona State, 78-74, at Wells Fargo Arena in the Trojans' second overtime loss of the season. Mashia's three-point jumper at the buzzer tied the score, sending the game into the extra period.
The Women of Troy drop to 7-7 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State improves to 11-4 and 4-1 in conference play.
Mashia's double-figure effort was joined by Tiffany Elmore's 13 points and Tashara Carter's 12. Elmore and Carter each added three steals and three blocks in the contest. As a team, the Trojans out-blocked the Sun Devils, 12 to three, and posted one of their best shooting performances of the season, hitting 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the field.
All five starters for Arizona State finished in double figures, Kitch Kitchen and Theresa Janzten each had 17, Sarah Allen posted 12, and Natalie Tucker and Rachel Holt each added 11.
USC led nearly the entire first half, entering the break with a 36-32 advantage. Despite not allowing a Sun Devil field goal for the first seven minutes of the second half, the Trojans watched Arizona State inch its way back at the free throw line. With 4:09 remaining, ASU took its first lead since early in the first half. Down by three at the 21-second mark, Mashia hit a three-pointer with 0:08 left on the clock to send the game into overtime. Each team made three field goals in the extra period, but it was the points at the line that made the difference for Arizona State. The Sun Devils made 24-of-39 free throw attempts in the contest, compared to USC's 13-of-19 opportunities.
"Fouls and offensive boards were the biggest factors in this game," said head coach Chris Gobrecht. "The offensive boards in the second half really got them back into the game - aside from their advantages at the line," said head coach Chris Gobrecht.
USC will travel to Arizona on Saturday, January 22, for a 1 p.m. (PT) game in Tucson, Ariz.
