
California Upsets Men's Water Polo

BERKELEY, CA: Senior driver Eldad Hazor scored a goal on a four-meter penalty shot with 2:13 in overtime to lead the No. 4 ranked Cal men's water polo team to a 9-8 upset of No. 1 ranked USC in a non-conference match Sunday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears improved their record to 6-3, while the Trojans fall to 9-1.
USC's Tim Wollthan was charged with the four-meter penalty that enabled Hazor to score the match-winner in the first three minute overtime period. Neither team scored in the second three minute overtime period.
Senior two-meter man Jerry Smith led Cal with four goals, including three goals in the first period as the Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one quarter. Hazor added three goals for Cal, including single goals in the second and third periods. USC's George Csaszar highlighted the Trojan's come back as he scored with 30 seconds in regulation to put the match into overtime at 8-8.
Cal was also received goals from juniors Mike West and Rob Arroyo. Sophomore goalie Russell Bernstein recorded 13 saves. Daniel Lonlay led USC with a team-best three goals.
The Trojans will host the UCLA Bruins on Saturday (Oct. 7) at 10 a.m. at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
