The Trojans took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but Stanford evened the score late in the period. The two teams battled back and forth, with each team staying within a goal of the lead. Stanford took its first lead of the game, 5-4, at 4:44 of the third period, but USC answered with three straight goals to take a 7-5 lead with 5:56 remaining in the game. Stanford's Peter Hudnut scored on penalty shot with 3:39 left to cut the lead to one, but the Trojans held on for the win. USC finishes in fifth place with a 20-6 record, and Stanford ends its season in 6th place with a 13-13 record.
UCLA won the MPSF Tournament, defeating California in the final. Pepperdine upset top-ranked UC Irvine in the third-place match, which may give an outside shot for the Trojans to get the only at-large bid available for the NCAA Championships next weekend. USC, who entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed and No. 3 ranked team in the nation, defeated UC Irvine in all three meetings this season.
