Eugene, Ore. - The No. 12 USC Women of Troy dropped the Oregon Ducks, 7-2, at the Eugene Swim and Tennis Club this afternoon. USC improves to 5-1 overall this season, and 2-1 in the Pac-10.
In singles action, Oregon's only victory came when Alina Wygonowska dropped the first set, but came back to defeat Kara Warkentin, 6-7, 6-1, 7-6(3). The match was part of a marathon of singles play between the two Pac-10 foes. Four of the six singles matches played were decided in the third set. USC's Jewel Peterson defeated Oregon freshman Monika Gieczys in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5).
In doubles play, Anita Loyola and Veronika Safarova defeated Oregon's duo of Alina Wygonowska and Janice Nyland, 8-5, following a 9-8 (3) upset over the Trojans' 38th-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Warkentin at the No. 1 position.
The Trojans' next dual match will be a makeup against Pepperdine on Feb. 24, originally scheduled last Thursday. USC will travel to the ITA Team Indoor Championships this week (Feb. 17-20).
