WESTWOOD, Calif. -- In a heated and highly competitive match, the No. 21 USC men's tennis team fell to crosstown foe No. 8 UCLA, 5-2, Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, the Trojans drop to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
The match came down to Courts No. 2 and 3. Only down by one, 2-3, the Trojans were not eager to give in.
On Court No. 3, Sophomore Nicholas Rainey claimed the first set, 6-0, over UCLA freshman Jean-Julien Rojer, who then earned a 7-5 win in the second. Rojer battled back from a 5-3 deficit to win the third set 7-5 and grab the win for the Bruins.
On Court No. 2, UCLA's Brandon Kramer, eventually prevailed 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 after a long and hard-fought battle against USC's Andrew Park.
Soon after, USC claimed its first point of the day when Daniel Langre defeated Lassi Ketola 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 4 position. The Trojans' second win came when freshman Parker Collins handed Chris Sands a 6-3, 6-1 loss, for his first Pac-10 victory of the season.
No. 4 Rainey and Ryan Moore began doubles play against UCLA's Lee and Kramer, before being forced to retire. Moore suffered an injury to the ankle, forcing him to withdraw from competition. The Bruins clinched the doubles point when Park and Collins fell to Sands and Rojer, 8-3.
USC will head to Kentucky next week (Feb. 24-27) to compete at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Louisville.
