Los Angeles, Calif. -- The 11th-ranked USC men's tennis team defeated the University of San Diego (2-2), 5-2, today (Feb. 8) at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the win, the Trojans improve to 5-1 overall in 2000.
USC swept all three doubles matches to start-off the afternoon with a 1-0 lead over the Toreros. Undefeated No. 7 Nicholas Rainey and Ryan Moore teamed for a 8-6 victory over German Maldonado and Ricardo Rizo. Ironically, it was the same match-up that earned Rainey and Moore the Fresno State Bulldog Classic title in October, 1999.
With the 2-0 Trojans' lead, San Diego's Mattias Tangefjord earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Moore at the No. 2 position, to bring the score within one (2-1). USC's Andrew Park defeated Rizo, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 3, Rainey defeated Sean Cooper, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at No. 5, and Troy's Daniel Langre posted a 7-6, 6-4 win over Ray Van Wasbeek to seal the victory for the Trojans.
The Trojans will return to their home court on Friday, Feb. 11, against UC Irvine. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
