Trojans Capture 6-1 Win At ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 19th-ranked USC men's tennis team posted a Pac-10 victory over Arizona State, 6-1, this afternoon at the Robson Player Facility in Tempe. With the win, the Trojans complete a two-match sweep of the Sun Devils and improve to 9-4 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-10. Arizona State falls to 4-5 and remains winless in conference matches (0-5).
In singles first court action, ASU senior Alex Osterrieth captured the lone Sun Devil point for singles matches against USC senior Patrick Gottesleben. Due to an injury, Osterrieth retired after the first set 7-6 (7). The Trojans gained wins on courts two, three, four, five and six. At the No. 4 position, USC sophomore Nicholas Rainey clinched the match victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Pim Van Mele.
With a 5-1 advantage, USC's duo of Ryan Moore and Nicholas Rainey added another point for the Trojans with a 9-8 (4) victory over ASU's Ed Carter and Osterrieth. Sun Devil tandem Mitchell Bowen and Matt Jacobs nabbed a second court win against Gottesleben and Daniel Langre, 8-5, but USC completed the contest with a 8-6 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Trojans return to action on Tuesday, March 14, against Utah. USC will host the Utes at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
