No. 12 Baseball Splits Against USD

SAN DIEGO -- The University of San Diego Toreros (16-10-1) earned a split in their home doubleheader this afternoon against the 12th-ranked USC Trojans (13-7), winning game one 10-4, and falling 5-3 in the nightcap.
In game one, freshman third baseman David Bagley (Rancho Bernardo HS) and junior shortstop Josh Harris each knocked in 3 runs to lead the Toreros to the 10-4 victory. USD scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning off of USC starter Ronald Flores (0-1) -- David Bagley and Josh Harris each collected RBI singles in the inning. The Toreros added 3 runs in the 4th inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead behind David Bagley's 2-run homer and Joe Lima's RBI single. After USC scored an unearned run in the top of the 5th, USD answered with 3 more runs in bottom of the 5th -- Josh Harris' 2-run single scored both Bagley and Alan Leuthard, extending the Toreros lead to 9-1. USD's final run came in the bottom of the 6th as Marty Hayes' single knocked in Greg Sain. USC added two runs in the 7th on the strength of Justin Gemoll's 5th homer of the season, a 2-run shot that also knocked in Anthony Lunetta. Seth Davidson's RBI sac-fly knocked in Alberto Concepcion in the 8th.
Torero freshman Aaron Wilson (Santana HS) pitched three innings (2nd thru 4th), allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run to improve his record to 2-1. For the game, USD was paced by Bagley (2-for-3, 2 runs, 3 RBI) and Harris (3-for-4, 1 run, 3 RBI), the USC Trojans were led by Gemoll's 2-run homer and Concepcion (2-for-4, 1 run).
In the nightcap, the Trojans scored 3 runs off of Torero starter Kevin Gray in their first two at bats to stake a 3-0 lead through the top of the 2nd. Justin Gemoll belted a 2-run triple in the 1st and Alberto Concepcion slammed a solo homer in the 2nd. USD answered right back in the bottom of the 2nd against USC starter Pete Montrenes with 2 runs of their own -- Marty Hayes doubled in Alan Leuthard, and Josh Harris' long fly out in foul territory down the right field line scored Hayes >from third.
San Diego knotted up the score at 3-all in the bottom of the 6th against Rik Currier. Alan Leuthard doubled down the left field line, and Marty Hayes knocked him in with a single.
USC took the lead for good in the top of the 7th as Josh Self belted a homer off of USD's David Waters (0-1). The Trojans added an insurance run in the 8th as Self's single scored Michael Melikian. For the game, the Trojans were paced by Anthony Lunetta (4-for-5, 1 run), Josh Self (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Juston Gemoll (1-for-4, 2 RBI).
USD's Marty Hayes collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, finishing with 2 RBI and 1 run. The Toreros head to Portland this weekend for a 3-game WCC series beginning on Friday, March 17th at 2:00 pm.
