STANFORD, Calif. - Second baseman Anthony Lunetta (Riverside/Arlington HS) went 3-for-6 with three doubles and four RBI Saturday to lead the No. 12-ranked USC Trojans to an 11-7 non-conference win over the No. 2 Stanford Cardinal at Sunken Diamond. The Trojans (14-8) evened their three-game series against the Cardinal (15-6) with the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Lunetta put the Trojans on the board first with a two-run double in the first inning. Stanford answered back in the bottom of the first with lead-off doubles by Craig Thompson and Eric Bruntlett. An RBI single by third baseman John Gall pushed Bruntlett across to tie the game.
An error by Lunetta in the third gave Stanford the 3-2 lead and the Cardinal added another run in the inning with another RBI single by Gall. The Trojans, however, broke the game open with four runs in the sixth and five in the seventh inning.
Shortstop Seth Davidson knocked in catcher Alberto Concepcion in the sixth while Lunetta added an RBI double. In the seventh, the Trojans capitalized on four walks and two hit batters allowed by the Cardinal staff.
Tim Petke entered the game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and got Stanford pinch hitter Jason VanMeetren to fly out to right, ending the Cardinal threat for his second save of the season. Pete Montrenes (2-0) picked up the win with one run on three hits in two innings of work.
The Trojans will host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (March 21) to resume the Feb. 8 suspended game, which was halted in the eighth inning due to darkness, with USC holding an 8-7 lead. The game will begin at 4:30 p.m. with the originally scheduled game at 5 p.m. to follow at the conclusion.
