LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore catcher Beau Craig hit three home runs Tuesday to lead the No. 20 USC Trojans to two victories, 9-8 (10 innings) and 7-3, over the Loyola Marymount Lions at Dedeaux Field in non-conference action. The first game was a continuation of the Feb. 8 game, which was suspended in the bottom of the eighth at Loyola Marymount due to darkness.
In the bottom of the ninth of the continued game with two outs, catcher Scott Walter lined an RBI single off USC pitching ace Mark Prior to score Jack Brooks to tie the game. In the top of the 10th, Craig hit a solo shot to right off Brian Felten for the game-winner. Prior picked up the win for the Trojans and improved to 5-2 on the season.
In the regularly scheduled game, center fielder Josh Self capped a four-run second inning for the Trojans (16-9) with a bases-loaded triple. Self went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBI. Craig added two solo shots, his 10th and 11th home runs of the season, respectively.
Tim Petke (Portland, OR/Portland Lutheran) picked up the win with five strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts, to improve to 2-1 on the season. With the bases loaded in the ninth, Mark Todd (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) struck out right fielder Jason Aspito on three straight pitches to pick up his first collegiate save. Felten (5-3), who started the game, pitched three innings for his second loss of the evening for the Lions (15-10).
The Trojans begin Pac-10 play on Friday (March 24) as they host the Washington State Cougars at Dedeaux Field at 6 p.m.
