LOS ANGELES -- Catcher Beau Craig (Santee/Grossmont HS) went 3-for-5 with a home run, his team-leading 12th of the season, and five RBI to lead the No. 20 USC Trojans to a 10-1 win and the three-game series sweep Sunday against Washington State at Dedeaux Field. It was the first series sweep for the Trojans this season as USC has now won four straight and five of its last six games.
Freshman Anthony Reyes (Whittier/California HS) delivered an Oscar-winning performance with his best effort of the season, going seven innings and allowing one run (unearned) on seven hits. Reyes struck out four and walked one to improve to 3-3 on the season for the Trojans (19-9, 3-0) at USC, one block away from the Shrine Auditorium and home to tonight's Academy Awards.
Reggie Rivard (0-3) picked up the loss for the Cougars (12-16, 2-4). With a 3-0 lead in the fifth, Craig greeted reliever Matt O'Brien with a bases-loaded double to center field on the first pitch. Third baseman Justin Gemoll added a two-run double down the right field and a sacrifice fly by Alberto Concepcion rounded out the six-run inning for the Trojans. Craig started the Trojans' seventh inning with a solo shot to right center. Craig went 8-for-13 for the weekend series with a double, triple, home run and nine RBI for the Trojans. Gemoll went 3-for-3 with two RBI while center fielder Josh Self went 2-for-5 with two doubles.
USC reliever Ronald Flores pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
The Trojans travel to San Diego State on Tuesday (March 28) at 5 p.m. before a Pac-10 series at Arizona next weekend.
