LOS ANGELES -- Freshman second baseman Anthony Lunetta (Riverside/Arlington HS) hit two home runs Tuesday while reliever Tim Petke threw two scoreless innings to record his first collegiate save as the No. 5 USC Trojans held off the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 6-5, at Dedeaux Field. The game, originally scheduled to be played in Santa Barbara, was moved to Dedeaux Field after UCSB's field was deemed unplayable due to heavy rains over the weekend.
Freshman Anthony Reyes (2-1) pitched six innings for the Trojans, who won their seventh straight game and are now 12-3 on the season. Reyes allowed five hits and two runs. Gabe Neboyia (1-2) took the loss for the Gauchos, who are now 8-8 on the season.
Lunetta hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first and then broke a 2-2 tie with a solo shot to right in the third to put the Trojans ahead for good. Third baseman Justin Gemoll went 3-for-4 against his former team while first baseman Bill Peavey went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Peavey has hit four doubles in his last two games.
The Gauchos rallied in the eighth with a two-run, bases-loaded single by right fielder Andy Campanella but Petke got center fielder R.J. Smith to pop up, ending the threat.
The Trojans will host No. 10 Houston in a three-game series this weekend at Dedeaux Field, beginning on Friday (March 10) at 5 p.m. Game time is 1 p.m. for Saturday (March 11) and Sunday (March 12).
