This Week -- The 18th-ranked USC men's tennis team (13-7, 3-2 Pac-10) remains on the road this week to face Pac-10 opponents, Washington (April 14) and Oregon (April 15). The Trojans split last week after defeating Cal, 5-2, on Friday, then falling to No. 3 Stanford, 2-5, on Saturday.
USC vs. Washington -- After defeating Washington, 4-3, at home last season, the Trojans remain undefeated (14-0) against the Huskies since the start of the series in 1963. This season, Washington owns a 14-6 record (2-2 Pac-10) after beating Arizona, 6-1, and falling to Arizona State, 4-3, last week.
USC vs. Oregon -- The Ducks and Trojans have only met five times since 1972. USC also remains undefeated in this series, sweeping Oregon at home last year, 7-0. This season, the Ducks are 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the Pac-10 after pulling off a 5-2 upset over Arizona State on Sunday, and defeating Arizona, 4-3, on Friday.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- USC brought Cal's four-match win streak to end with a 5-2 victory over the Golden Bears on Friday (April 7), also breaking its own two-match losing slump. The Trojans came up strong in doubles, taking two of three matches to capture the first point, then assured the victory by winning four of six singles matches. The only contest decided in a third-set tiebreaker came at the No. 5 spot as Nicholas Rainey posted a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 decision over the Bears' Scott Kintz.
On Saturday (April 8), USC suffered a 5-2 loss at 4th-ranked Stanford. The Trojans picked up their two points on a three-set win by freshman Daniel Langre at No. 3 singles, and a straight set victory by sophomore Andrew Park at No. 4. Langre beat K.J. Hippensteel, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, and Park defeated Scotty Scott, 6-3, 6-3.
Langre Named USC player of the Week -- After moving up to the No. 3 spot in the lineup, Daniel Langre posted two impressive wins last week against Cal and Stanford. Langre currently owns the team's best record overall (20-3) and in the Pac-10 (9-1).
USC News & Notes -- Four of the Trojans' seven losses this season have come by 4-3 scores... Assistant Coach Glen Michibata has been named Princeton's head coach for the 2000-01 season... Daniel Langre and senior Patrick Gottesleben went undefeated in singles matches at the USTA/ITA Team Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-27)... The Trojans' are 1-5 against top-25 ranked opponents in 2000... After finishing the 1999 season ranked 17th, USC jumped six spots (11th) in the ITA fall rankings.
Head Coach Dick Leach -- Dick Leach enters his 21st season at the helm of the USC men's tennis program. In 20 years with the Trojans, he has amassed a 490-117 (.807) overall record and won three national championships (1991, 1993, 1994). His teams have garnered seven Pac-10 championships, for which Leach has been named conference coach of the year four times (1987, 1991, 1992, 1994). Last season, he guided USC to a 19-5 (.792) overall mark, third place finish in the Pac-10 (5-2), and second round appearance at the NCAAs.
Next Up -- The Trojans return home to face Stanford on April 21 and Cal on April 22. Both matches will be played at Marks Tennis Stadium.
