LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Justin Gemoll slammed a 2-2 pitch from John Skinner for a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the ninth Tuesday as the No. 19 USC Trojans rallied for a 6-4 win over the San Diego State Aztecs in a non-conference game at Dedeaux Field. Gemoll has hit a home run in six of his last seven games and went 3-for-5 for the evening.
The Trojans (24-13) were down by one run in the ninth when center fielder Brian Barre led off with a solo home run to center field on the first pitch by Skinner. The Aztecs (20-21) rallied from a three-run deficit and took the lead in the top of the ninth on a two-out solo home run by second baseman Matt Ricardy, who hit an 0-2 pitch off USC reliever Chad Clark. Clark picked up his first win of the season (1-0) in 1 and 1/3 innings of work. Skinner (1-6) suffered the loss for the Aztecs, who utilized a different pitcher in every inning.
Ronald Flores made his third start of the season for the Trojans and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits in 7 and 2/3 innings of work. The Trojans will travel to Berkeley for a Pac-10 conference series at California this weekend, beginning on Friday (April 14) at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. USC is tied for second place in the Pac-10 Conference with a 6-3 record, along with Arizona State and Stanford. All three teams are one game behind first-place UCLA. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com
