LOS ANGELES -- Justin Gemoll hit two home runs Friday to lead the No. 24 USC Trojans to a 12-1 Pac-10 victory over the Oregon State Beavers at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans (33-18, 11-8) have now won five straight games and six of their last seven.
Rik Currier (11-3) tied a season-high by striking out 12 batters in 6 and 1/3 innings of work. He now has 301 career strikeouts and is only the fifth pitcher in USC history to record at least 300 strikeouts in his career. Currier allowed eight hits and walked only one batter. The Beavers drop to 27-23 overall and are now 8-11 in Pac-10 play. Gemoll hit a solo shot off Oregon State pitcher Thad Johnson (5-5) in the first to center field. In the fifth inning, Gemoll hit a three-run homer that bounced off the top of the wall in right field. Gemoll now has a team-leading 17 home runs on the season and finished the evening with a 3-for-5 performance with four RBI. Seth Davidson hit a double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Beau Craig went 3-for-4 for the Trojans. With the score 1-1, the Trojans opened the game open with four runs on five hits in the fourth and three runs in the fifth for an 8-1 lead after five innings.
The series will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the series finale and final home game of the season for USC on Sunday (May 14) at 1 p.m.
