LOS ANGELES -- With three days of rain delays in Malibu, Calif., freshman Jewel Peterson still managed to pose a great run at the 2000 NCAA Tennis Individual Championships. She was one of six Trojans to qualify and compete in the men's and women's postseason singles and doubles competition.
With a 9-16 seed, Peterson was the furthest to advance for the Women of Troy. She defeated Michelle Dasso of Notre Dame with a come-from-behind effort, 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, in the first round. She then got past Julie Ditty of Vanderbilt, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, in the second round with another three-set victory.
Her easiest match of the tournament came in the round of 16 where she faced conference opponent Karin Palme of Arizona State. Peterson had already defeated Palme once this season en route to claiming the ASU Tournament championship in the fall. On Wednesday (May 24) morning she advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Palme, only to end her run that afternoon to another 9-16 tournament seed. Peterson was defeated by Laura Granville of Stanford, 6-1, 6-1.
Senior Veronika Safarova was USC's other selection in the women's individual tournament. She dropped in the first round with a loss to Katarina Malec of UNLV, 6-0, 6-1. Partners Tiffany Brymer and Kara Warkentin, who entered the tournament as first alternates, made it into the lineup after Sara Walker of UCLA was forced to withdraw due to injury. The duo was also defeated in the first round by Martina Ondrejkova and Iva Puflerova of South Alabama, 6-4, 6-1.
The men's individual championship, taking place in Athens, Ga. May 24-May 28, began after Stanford had been crowed the team champion on Tuesday (May 23). Senior Patrick Gottesleben represented the Trojans in singles and fell in the first round to Alexander Hartman of Mississippi, 6-2, 6-2.
11th-ranked Nicholas Rainey and Ryan Moore were selected to compete in the doubles championship, which begins today (May 25). The duo will face Scott Bornstein and Ahn-Ahn Liu of Princeton at 2 p.m.
