FULLERTON, Calif. - The No. 1 seeded USC Trojans tied a season-high with 18 hits for a 13-5 win Saturday over the No. 3 seeded Loyola Marymount Lions at Goodwin Field in the 2000 NCAA Baseball Regional, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. The Trojans broke a 5-5 tie with three runs in the eighth and five runs in the ninth. USC has now won 12 straight games, the most since an 11-game streak during the 1998 national championship season. The last time USC won 13 straight was in 1995, when the Trojans made it to the national championship game.
Seth Davidson went 5-for-6 for the Trojans while Rob Garibaldi went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Mark Prior improved to 9-6 on the season, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits. Prior had eight strikeouts and five walks.
Loyola Marymount (40-18) took a 5-3 lead in the fifth after a two-run double on a 0-2 pitch by designated hitter Jeff Walker. The Trojans (40-18) loaded the bases in the sixth and tied the game on a two-run single by Garibaldi.
The Trojans broke the game open in the eighth. Alberto Concepcion was hit by a Chris Gray pitch and scored on a triple by Brian Barre. RBI singles by Garibaldi and catcher Beau Craig finished the three-run inning. Two hit batters and an intentional walk loaded the bases again for USC in the ninth before a two-run single by Davidson started the five-run inning.
USC will play the winner of the Cal State Fullerton-Loyola Marymount game, which started at 10 p.m., on Sunday at 1 p.m. If USC loses, the winner-take-all championship game would take place approximately 45 minutes at the conclusion of the 1 p.m. game. The game can be heard live on usctrojans.com.
