Los Angeles - The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team swept the doubles matches and won four of six singles matches to defeat the University of Oregon, 5-2, in a non-conference match Friday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium.
With the win, the Women of Troy improve to 8-3 overall, while the Ducks fall to 3-5.
USC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking all three doubles matches, 8-4, 8-0 and 8-0. The Trojans' Jewel Peterson and Maureen Diaz then quickly earned singles points for the Women of Troy, giving the team a commanding 3-0 lead over the Ducks. Anita Loyola then secured the win for the Trojans by sweeping Oregon's Janice Nyland, 6-2, 7-5.
With the match in hand, Bernadette Bayani earned another singles point for the Women of Troy, which increased the Trojan's lead to 5-0. However, Oregon's No. 5 and No. 6 singles players, Davina Mendiburu and Courtney Nagle, defeated USC's Tiffany Brymer and Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg to prevent the Ducks from being swept.
The Women of Troy's next match is against cross-town rival UCLA at noon on Saturday, March 3, in Westwood.
