LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 13th-ranked USC women's tennis team (4-1) defeated San Diego State 6-0 this afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium in a match that lasted nearly six hours due to a three-hour rain delay.
USC opened play by sweeping all three doubles matches, but soon after the match was held due to rain.
Both teams were forced to wait three hours before starting the singles matches. Resuming play with a 1-0 lead, the Trojans opened with four quick first-set victories at courts No. 1, 3 and 5. All three positions paced each other as Jewel Peterson, Maureen Diaz and Melissa Esmero gave USC its next three points to clinch the dual match victory.
At No. 2, Anita Loyola battled with SDSU's Lindsey Hedberg to pull out a 7-6 win in the first set, then finished the match 6-2 in the second. At No. 4, freshman Bernadette Bayani dropped the opening set 7-6, but came back to win 6-2 in the second and a 10-7 tiebreaker for the win. The No. 6 match was never played.
USC returns to the court on Friday, Feb. 9, versus Pepperdine. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
